#ChibokGirls: Women Affairs Minister, Aisha Alhassan Goofed During Press Briefing
Last week Thursday, the Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development, Jummai Alhassan (Mama Taraba) who has been mostly in charge of the released Chibok Girls in Abuja, called a press briefing at which she discussed in detail the progress that the FG has made in the rehabilition process of the Chibok school girls who have been released.
She spoke about the fact that her Ministry had been taking care of the 24 freed girls before these 82 were released and the steps taken by the government to put them in good shape since many of them had to undergo medical treatment since they came back in pretty bad shape.
It appears the Minister was forced to host this press conference in order to address the concerns of the public as regards the Federal Government still holding the released girls, away from Chibok and away from their parents and family. And she did.
The only thing is she maybe “over addressed” this issue at some point.
According to the Minister, “the people complaining that they’re not allowed to see the #Chibok21 are not their biological parents or guardians.” This may well be true but did she have to say that? The people asking are Nigerians aren’t they and the Chibok Girls are more than just #Chibok21, releasing them has attained some level of national importance and Nigerians have a right to inquire about those.
She also promised that “persons doubting that #Chibok82 are#ChibokGirls—we’re happy to pay for you to travel to Chibok to confirm from families”. This is the perfect Nigerian rude response to anyone that has started to get on your nerves about an issue like this. Not befitting of a minister. Nigerians asking the FG for details on issues of national importance should not be met with a Minister who only has flippant responses that sound like: “go and ask them yourself”.
